Service guide
Stamped and decorative concrete presses pattern, texture and color into a slab while it is still plastic. Done well it reads convincingly as stone, brick or slate for a fraction of the material cost. Done badly it reads unmistakably as stamped concrete, and there is no fixing it after the slab sets.
The pour, the stamp and the color all happen inside one narrow working window, judged by feel, with no opportunity to undo anything. A crew that pours excellent plain flatwork is not automatically a crew that stamps well — it is a genuinely different skill.
Ask to see photographs of their own completed decorative work, ideally several years old rather than freshly poured. Color holding up after three Oklahoma summers tells you far more than a photograph taken the day the sealer went down.
Visible pattern repetition, because the crew did not rotate and vary the mats. Flat, uniform color with no depth, because release color was skipped or applied carelessly. Grout lines of inconsistent depth. And smooth, slick patches where texture was lost — a genuine slip hazard when wet, and the most common complaint about decorative concrete in practice.
Stamping adds $4 to $8 per square foot over plain concrete. Exposed aggregate adds $2 to $5, integral color $0.75 to $1.50, acid staining $2 to $4, decorative borders and bands $3 to $8 per linear foot.
Decorative surfaces need resealing every two to three years in Oklahoma's climate. That is a real commitment, not a footnote — an unsealed stamped patio fades and the color wears through at traffic points. Budget for it or choose a finish that does not require it.

It can, particularly smooth-troweled patterns and any area where texture was lost during stamping. For pool decks, steps and anywhere that gets wet, ask specifically about slip resistance — a textured pattern plus a sealer with grit additive addresses it. This is worth raising before the pour rather than after the first fall.
The concrete lasts as long as any other properly built slab, 30 to 50 years. The decorative surface is the shorter clock: color and sealer need renewing every two to three years in Oklahoma, and traffic areas wear faster. Neglected, a stamped patio looks tired in five to seven years while remaining structurally sound.
